Application status of anticoagulant coating in medical device market
Back to list

Anticoagulant coating is a material coated on the surface of medical devices to make it have anticoagulant function. At present, common anticoagulant coatings include heparin coating and phosphorylcholine coating imitating cell membranes, etc., and the mechanisms of action of the two are different. Heparin mainly plays an anticoagulant role by accelerating the rate at which antithrombin neutralizes active coagulation factors. Phosphorylcholine is the main lipid on the outer layer of non-activated cell membranes. It is an amphoteric phospholipid that can resist protein and cell adhesion. attached to achieve anticoagulant effect.

Anticoagulant coatings with the above two modes of action will solve the thrombus problem in interventional implant therapy to a certain extent. Therefore, the popularization of anticoagulant coatings in the field of medical devices is an inevitable trend. In recent years, major foreign medical device companies have launched anti-coagulation device products, and then we will take stock of the application of anti-coagulation coatings in the market.

1. Integrated Membrane Oxygenator

The integrated membrane oxygenator consists of a separate membrane oxygenator and/or an arterial filter (integrated) and a venous blood reservoir, which are used to supply oxygen to human blood, remove carbon dioxide in the blood, and regulate blood temperature. Blood vessels are used to collect, store and filter blood. The product is ethylene oxide sterilized and disposable.

Manufacturers currently applying anticoagulant coatings to this product include Terumo from Japan, Sorin Group from Italy and Mekvi from Germany.

2. Vascular Graft

Vascular grafts are made of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene and steam sterilized. As a vascular prosthesis, this product can be used for diversion or reconstruction of abnormal or blocked blood vessels, segmental bypass surgery and arteriovenous shunt of blood access.

Manufacturers of vascular grafts that have used anticoagulant coatings include Medtronic, Mekvi, Bellus Medical, Jotec GmbH, etc.

3. Coronary Stent

Coronary stents are composed of microporous surface stents (sand blasted) that are expected to be implanted in the human body, and CURARE Cathy No.4PTCA balloon dilatation catheters as delivery systems. The stent material is 316L stainless steel, and the balloon material is Pebax7033SA01. Sterilized by ethylene oxide, single use.

The product is intended for long-term implantation in the lumen of narrowed coronary arteries or aortocoronary bridge vessels to maintain patency after acute or subacute coronary artery occlusion. It can also be used for restenosis or arterial dissection after PTCA surgery.

Medtronic, Corline Systems AB, etc. have applied anticoagulant coating equipment manufacturers to the products on the market.

(jMedtech focuses on one-stop medical coating solutions: heparin coating, phosphorylcholine coating , anticoagulant coating, hydrophilic coating, hydrophilic super slippery coating, medical hydrophilic coating, friction test equipment, hydrophilic coating equipment, coating machine, friction machine, PC coating, plasma equipment , push force test equipment, etc.)

4. Extracorporeal circulation device

The extracorporeal circulation device (artificial heart-lung machine) is composed of artificial heart (blood pump), artificial lung (oxygenator), thermostat, pipeline, filter, console and electronic instruments. This product has anti-coagulant coatings applied by medical device companies such as Germany's Microway, Medtronic, Biointeractions, and Edwards Lifesciences.

In addition to the above products, there are also hemodialysis catheters produced by Biointeractions, catheters produced by Biointeractions and Atrium Medical (Maquet Getinge Group), and ventricular assist devices, stent grafts, and vascular stents developed and marketed by Medtronic. >Integrate anti-coagulant coatings with device products to maximize their effectiveness.

At present, many domestic medical device companies have also begun to closely deploy anti-coagulation device products, including covered stents, dense mesh stents, artificial blood vessels and so on.

There are two anticoagulant coatings on the market at present: Hygea™ Heparin Anticoagulant Coating and Indigo™ Phosphorylcholine Anticoagulant Coating, with good anticoagulant effect, good biocompatibility, Long-acting and other characteristics. We will assist customers to develop new products, provide customers with matching anticoagulant coating solutions, and help the development and rise of anticoagulant devices in China.
